World Glaucoma week 2020!

This week, we are celebrating the World Glaucoma Week.
Initiative born by the collaboration between the World Glaucoma Association and the World Glaucoma Patient Association. The objective is to bring awareness to the importance of regular eye checks to detect glaucoma in its early stages.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that is associated with elevated intraocular pressure, in which damage to the eye (optic) nerve can lead to loss of vision. Glaucoma is one of the leading cause of irreversible blindness.

Glaucoma is a disease that could be invisible because most of the time patients cannot feel and see the symptoms. This is why the two associations wants to bring awareness around this disease.

There are several types of glaucoma. Some may occur as a complication of other visual disorders but for the vast majority, they occur without a known cause.

Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide; the third most common in Europe and the USA. It is estimated that 78 million persons globally are living with glaucoma and that this number will rise to 111.8 million by 2040.

Currently, there is no cure for glaucoma, and vision loss due to glaucoma is irreversible; however, medication or surgery (traditional or laser) can halt or slow down any further vision loss.
Early detection is paramount to limiting visual impairment and preventing the progression towards severe visual handicap or blindness. Eye professionals can detect glaucoma in its early stages and advise on the best course of action.

How prevent glaucoma?

• Routine eye checks
• Following a nutritious and well-rounded diet
• Exercising regularly to promote blood flow
• Not smoking
• Regulating caffeine intake
• Protecting your eyes from injury, trauma and the sun (wear eye protection)
